NBSS resources
The National Behaviour Support Service (NBSS) is an agency of the
Department of Education that works with teachers in second level schools to
support them in dealing with students who have challenging behaviour. One
part of their approach is to devise effective pedagogical strategies that can
help engage students in their learning. They include:
Comprehension and learning strategies To achieve at second level students need a repertoire of learning, thinking and study strategies that they can apply across all subjects. This resource outlines research-based comprehension, learning and thinking strategies that can be integrated into all subject areas. Posters are also available from the NBSS designed to supplement the teaching of the strategies outlined in this resource and are intended as a visual reference for students of the key comprehension and learning strategies they need.
Language and literacy games – Teacher resource This resource has a range of language and literacy games
Literacy and learning – Programmes and resources This resource gives an overview of commercially available programmes and resources that teachers have used successfully to support the development of reading, learning and literacy skills.
NBSS literacy resources list The full list of literacy, learning and study skills that will be available on the NBSS website
PQRST study method booklet This booklet is an example of a student booklet that can be made up when working on teaching a specific study strategy.
READ – Engaging students with high interest low readability books This resource provides information on high interest/low readability fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as titles related to specific subject topic areas. High Interest and Low Readability books can encourage reading and support the development of fluency and vocabulary skills.
Reading strategy bookmarks Schools use these bookmarks when teaching students the key comprehension strategies – for utilisation in conjunction with any of the other comprehension, learning and study skills materials.
SQ3R study method booklet This booklet is an example of a student booklet that can be made up when working on teaching a specific study strategy.
Study and learning skills – Strategies for success This resource contains a variety of exercises on text features and questioning and summarising strategies, which are key comprehension and learning skills that help students read and learn from their textbooks. The strategies can be used alongside whatever texts the students are working on. Each strategy should be used with some relevant text.
Useful web resources and sites for literacy and learning This teacher resource gives an overview of websites suitable to use with students across a variety of curriculum areas, as well as sites where teachers can access resources and materials for their subject area.
Vocabulary building – Writing with wow words This resource describes ways to expand students’ use of vibrant or ‘wow’ words and presents activities for developing their writing skills. Also available from the NBSS will be a powerpoint presentation on proofreading and editing that can be used with students in conjunction with this resource.
