New Web-based directory of Guidance and Support Services for Early School Leavers and Young People at Risk

Linked to the National Centre for Guidance in Education website, www.ncge.ie, this database is the result of research carried out under the NCGE YOUTHSTART Project 'Training Youthreach Staff in Non-formal Guidance Skills' which provided training for Youthreach staff in UCC, UCD, St, Angela's College in Sligo and UL.

The final report and evaluation of this project is available on request from NCGE - info@ncge.ie.

In addition to the training , the project included research on the provision of guidance and support services for early school leavers and young people at risk. The web-based directory is a result of the extensive research. The database contains information on all kinds of support services for early school leavers and young people at risk in Ireland, and is intended as a networking tool for all those working with the client group. The Database is available from the NCGE homepage under the link 'Directory of Guidance and Support Services'. All Youthreach Centres should have an entry in the database - please feel free to add or edit your entries.

The research report 'Reaching Out.. The Provision of Guidance and Support Services by Projects/Programmes for Early School Leavers and Young People at Risk in Ireland' is another product of this research.

The report which explores success and limiting factors in working with the target group, causes of early school leaving, in addition to the provision of guidance and counselling in respondent organisations, proposes a 4-tier model of guidance and counselling provision for early school leavers and young people at risk. This report is also available from NCGE.

CYPHER
C
ounselling Youthreach Pregnancies Holistically using Evaluation Research

An interesting research project is presently being undertaken by Mike Power, from the City of Dublin VEC Psychology Service in Winstead.

An interagency project between CDVEC and the Crisis Pregnancy Agency, CYPHER aims to look closely at how counselling/support is operating in relation to the issue of youth pregnancy within Youthreach Centres.

On the face of it, it would seem that this is an important issue within the Youthreach system. But are Co-ordinators, Staff and others really meeting the needs here..?

This project aims to assess counselling/support requirements here and then to outline a practical strategy for meeting them. Centres in CDVEC and in 7 provincial locations will be surveyed for their views.

Mike has previously worked as a Skills Foundation Tutor (NDTI), Clinical Psychologist and recently Consultant Psychologist to the Government Taskforce on Workplace Bullying.

An example of an 'action-research' project, CYPHER aims to outline an innovative and practical approach to coping with this important contemporary issue.

Mike welcomes views and comments to: Psychology Dept., Winstead, 25 Temple Rd., Dartry, Dublin 6. Phone: 4971442.
